What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?

GEO, or generative engine optimization, is optimizing your online presence so that your brand is named and recommended in the answers of AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. Where SEO is about positions in Google, GEO is about whether you appear in the generated answer itself. The goal is simple: when someone asks an AI for a recommendation in your category, you want to be named.

What is AEO, and how does it relate to GEO?

You will come across three closely related terms:

  • GEO (generative engine optimization): becoming visible in the answers of generative AI assistants.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization): becoming visible in direct answers, broadly understood, including Google's AI Overviews and featured snippets.
  • SEO (search engine optimization): ranking in the classic search results.

In practice GEO and AEO are often used interchangeably. The underlying work is largely the same: making sure you are a clear, reliable, quotable source. Pick one term for your own communication and stay consistent. We use GEO, with AEO as a synonym.

Why GEO matters for businesses

A growing part of orientation is shifting from searching to asking. People ask an assistant for a shortlist, a recommendation or a comparison, and get one answer back instead of a results page. That answer has room for a handful of brands. If you are in it, you are in view exactly at the moment of choice. If you are not, you miss that customer without knowing it, because there is no position you just barely fall short of.

A side effect: AI answers and AI Overviews take clicks away from the classic search results. Traffic that used to reach your site now sometimes stays inside the answer. GEO is the way to end up in that answer.

How does GEO work?

AI assistants build their answer from sources: pages and domains they trust and find relevant to the question. They choose those sources based on, among other things, clarity, structure, authority and recency. Then they summarize and name the brands that come up in those sources.

So GEO works in two steps: making sure you are on the sources the assistant uses, and making sure your content is written so it is easy to quote. A short, factual answer at the top of a page gets picked up more often than a long story without a clear core.

GEO versus SEO

GEO does not replace SEO, it sits alongside it. They reinforce each other: good, structured and authoritative content helps with both. The difference is in the goal and the point of measurement. How to get started with GEO

01

Make sure you may be crawled

Check that your robots.txt does not block the AI crawlers (GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot). Invisible to the crawler is invisible in the answer.

02

Write quotably

Put a short, factual core answer at the top of every page. Use clear question headings, lists and tables instead of long walls of text.

03

Add structure that machines read

FAQ schema, Organization schema and a clear heading structure help assistants understand and take over your content.

04

Build authority on the right sources

Be in the places the assistants draw on: trade media, overviews, reliable references. Consistent information about your brand helps the model place you correctly.

05

Measure whether it works

Without measurement you do not know whether you are named. Repeat the measurement, so you can tell real change from chance.

How do you measure whether GEO works?

You cannot read it off a single answer, because AI answers vary from time to time and from assistant to assistant. Reliable measuring means: asking the same questions repeatedly across multiple assistants, and reporting with an interval instead of a bare number. That is how you know whether your visibility is really rising.

That is exactly what Geony does: repeated measurements across multiple assistants, with confidence intervals and traceable sources. Ready to get concrete about your brand's visibility? See GEO optimization or go straight to the free AI check.

Frequently asked questions

What does GEO mean?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization: becoming visible and named in the answers of generative AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?

GEO (generative engine optimization) is specifically about generative AI assistants. AEO (answer engine optimization) is broader and covers all direct answers, including Google's AI Overviews and featured snippets. The underlying work largely overlaps; the terms are often used interchangeably.

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO focuses on your position in the search results of Google and Bing. GEO focuses on whether you are named in AI answers. SEO measures you on positions and clicks, GEO on mentions and share of voice. They reinforce each other, but have a different point of measurement.

Does GEO replace my SEO strategy?

No. GEO sits alongside SEO. Much of the underlying work (clear, structured, authoritative content) helps with both. You keep doing SEO for the search results and add GEO for the AI answers.

How do I optimize my website for GEO?

Make sure AI crawlers may read you, write a short and factual core answer at the top of every page, use a clear heading structure with FAQ and Organization schema, and build authority on the sources assistants use. Then measure whether your visibility rises.

How do I measure my visibility in ChatGPT?

By repeatedly putting the same questions your customers ask to ChatGPT and other assistants and counting how often you are named, with a confidence interval. Geony does this automatically; the free check gives you a first impression.
